Oral Surgery

Stoma Advanced Dental Care offers Orthognathic surgery to align top and bottom jaws or teeth to fit within the jaw. Teeth are straightened with orthodontics, and corrective jaw surgery repositions a misaligned jaw. This not only improves facial appearance, but also ensures that teeth meet correctly and function properly. We have expertise in dental implant and wisdom tooth removal, techniques to rebuild bone structure.

First Consultation

Difficulty in the following areas are evaluated at the first consultation.

Difficulty in chewing, biting, or swallowing
Speech problems
Chronic jaw or TMJ pain
Open bite
Protruding jaw
Breathing problems

Any of these symptoms can exist at birth, be acquired after birth as a result of hereditary or environmental influences, or as a result of trauma to the face. Before any treatment begins, a consultation will be held to perform a complete examination with x-rays. During the pre-treatment consultation process, feel free to ask any questions that you have regarding your treatment. When you are fully informed about the aspects of your care, you and your dentist can make the decision to proceed with treatment together.

However, a complex medical history will necessitate an evaluation and a second appointment for treatment. Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation. Your surgical referral slip and any x-rays if applicable.

A list of medications you are currently taking.

IMPORTANT:

All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

A pre-operative consultation and physical examination is mandatory for patients undergoing anaesthesia for surgery. Please have nothing to eat or drink eight hours prior to your surgery. You will also need an adult to drive you home. Please alert the clinic if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are currently taking any medication (i.e., heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.).

Please forward your X-rays to our clinic. If additional films are necessary, they will be taken at our facility.

We will schedule your appointment as promptly as possible. If you have pain or an emergency situation, every attempt will be made to see you that day. Various circumstances may lengthen the time allocated for a procedure. Emergency cases can also arise and cause delays. We appreciate your understanding and patience.

Braces are maintained during surgery and may need to be removed six to twelve months after surgery.
The greatest impact of orthognathic surgery is the recovery phase.
Patients typically may be off work/school from two weeks to one month after surgery.
Return to normal chewing function may take 2 months and full function may take one year.
